About us

We are a non contesting community brass band, making brass banding affordable to all.

The History of S13 Brass Ensemble

S13 Brass Ensemble was founded and formed by Norman Cawkwell in 1981. Through local funding and later lottery grants, the band was able to purchase instruments and music and grow into the band that it is today.

Chris Leader joined the band in 1982 aged 11. He has played various instruments but remained on euphonium for a number of years, before taking over the reigns when Norman retired in October 2015.

As a band we are very proud that we have managed to continue despite the decline in brass banding over the years. We are a community band and as such have ensured that links are maintained with the local primary school, who we invite to come along to our Christmas concerts.

We are a not just a band but a family, and like to see our members grow, many of whom have played with the band for numerous years.

As a band we have played at Blackpool tower ball room and we play at Peaseholm Park in Scarborough every year.

We are also delighted that we have had the opportunity to have made long lasting friendships with the Blaserkreis Hontrop band from Sheffield’s twin city of Bochum in Germany. We have been very fortunate to visit Germany and play alongside the band in their home town and for them to come over here and visit us, since 1985.

We continue to practice at the Old Rectory at Handsworth where the band began in 1981.
